Maria Koutamanis completed her studies in Social Psychology at Utrecht University with an MSc thesis on risky self-disclosure among teenagers in online networking environments. As of September 2011 she is a PhD candidate at the Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR), University of Amsterdam. She investigates longitudinal effects of social media use among adolescents.
